Latin & The King
When most people think of Latin they think of the dead language
of dusty old books that scholars read. Or, for those in private schools,
language classes in High School.
However, one Finnish has taken the love of Latin to a whole new level – he
sings Elvis Presley’s songs in Latin! (Can’t
Help Falling In Love – or Non adamare non possum)
Dr Jukka Ammondt, the signer, gives the following reason for
his strange songs, "The legend of Elvis Presley lives for ever, and it’s
of course very important to sing Elvis Presley’s songs in the Latin language,
because Latin is the eternal language." (Reported on the BBC)
In fact, Dr. Ammondt is not the only Finnish with a love of
Latin. There is a Latin news radio broadcast with about 75,000 listeners: "In
Latin we have more listeners in the world than for Finnish broadcasts,"
explains Professor Tuomo Pekannen, who does the translations. (full article)
Environment – just because…
Also on the BBC, there is a cool page on the environmental impact
each country is having on the world. It has different graphs and charts showing
the relationship between the rate of consummation vs the rate of re-growth. Note surprisingly, developed countries (US, UK, Japan,
Russia, South Africa, ect) use more resources then Africa,
South America, and parts of Asia. (full article)
Note: no real reason for posting this… I just thought it was
cool. =)
